Content Management

Part of our success as a technology company is that we’re not wedded to any particular software solution - our clients’ needs drive the technology decisions, not the other way around.

Throughout every project, we hold fast to two questions: who is the audience and what are our goals. A key to success is delivering an engaging user experience and that means arranging and presenting content in the most intuitive way possible to achieve our goals.

  • Project Requirements

The engine that supports the user experience only needs to be as powerful as the architecture of the site demands.

    • How many content templates need to be supported?
    • Is the site presented in multiple languages and/or currencies?
    • Does the user experience require collecting and processing information from external resources such as news feeds, commodity indexes, membership databases, etc?

These are important questions that we ask as we begin to define the technical requirements.

  • Selecting the Right Technology

Once we’ve defined the technical requirements and gained an understanding of a client’s internal resources, we can judge a range of content management solutions.

Aligning requirements to product features usually results in a few options rising to the top. Other considerations include a client’s own preferences for open source vs proprietary, existing use of application environments such as Microsoft .NET and SQL or BEA or Oracle, and the availability of structured training.

A recent project involved the selection of Ektron CMS, a proprietary solution based on the .NET framework. The power of Ektron is the flexibility to use a variety of tools to construct the functionality required by the architecture of the site. The challenge is to begin with a complete understanding of the project requirements so that all modules of the delivered project work harmoniously.
